1500mm and 1800mm ID Herrenknecht Backactor

A E Yates Trenchless Solutions Ltd have a Herrenhnecht MH3 backactor which can be mounted in either 1500ID or 1800ID shield. This machine is a very efficient way of excavation dry stable material and a lot cheaper to own and operate than a slurry machine. The material is won from the face with the backactor and loaded into a skip using a conveyor. Skips are removed via winching along the tunnel and removed from the pit using a crane or suitably equipped excavator.

This machine is powered by an electro-hydraulic power pack in the shield. This gives lower power losses as the distance down the tunnel increase and, with the tunnel size allowing the use of bentoniting and interjacks, long distances can be driven. 200m is easily accomplished but above this time winching the skips becomes excessive. The only downside of a backactor is that to get the best production a large drive pit is required. A 7m long pit is ideal (shorter is possible using short rams and spacers) and while this is not usually an issue where a sheeted pit is used it can increase prices considerably when a circular shaft is used.
