Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a trenchless technique used to install pipes, ducts or cables that need to follow a straight or curved path.
The process involves creating an initial pilot borehole of interconnecting flexible rods. This hole can then be enlarged by pulling a larger diameter cutting head back along the path of the rods. Diameters between 60mm and 1,200mm are attainable.
The product pipe, duct or cable is installed by attaching it to the end of the rods and pulling it back towards the drilling rig as the rods are extracted. Spoil from the drilling process is removed in the form of slurry.
A.E. Yates has considerable expertise with directional drilling and our extensive range of HDD equipment has enabled us to meet the demands of a wide variety of pipe and cable laying projects. Our largest HDD rig has a pull back force of 70 tonnes and single-span boreholes of 500m can be achieved without the need for intermediate pits.
